Course Overview

In this 4-week online course you will:

  • Develop a detailed "eye" for visual design
  • Be able to decide which typefaces to use
  • Be equipped to choose and create color palettes
  • Learn about best practices for UI patterns and reusable design components
  • Know how to create retina-ready designs that scale across different devices

You'll end the course with a certificate of completion, a portfolio of projects, and a strong skillset in UI design.


This course is intended as a follow-up to our Design 101 course, or for anyone who has a basic understanding of visual design principles. Students are expected to be acquainted with a professional design tool before they begin this class.

  • Where can I learn more about UI Design?

  • How is this course different than Design 101?

    This is a more advanced offering than Design 101, which is a beginner-level course. Students are expected to have a basic level of design understanding in this course — course content is more detailed, and mentor expectations are higher.

  • When will the bonuses be shipped?

    We'll follow up with your ticket to the UI workshop in early July. Your limited edition Designlab pin will be in your welcome kit, and the cheatsheet and Spotify playlists will be sent to you when the course launches.

  • Do I need any special tools for the course, like Illustrator or Sketch?

    You're required to use a professional design tool (like Illustrator, Sketch, Photoshop, Figma, or more) during the course.You'll be building your projects and portfolio in these.

  • Will I be able to get a job after this?

    This is a 40-hour course that's not quite intended to create job-level outcomes. But, you will get a strong understanding of UI fundamentals, and start to build a great portfolio of work in this course.

  • How is the course pacing?

    This course is built for busy folks. Expect to spend about 10 hours per week between projects, readings, and mentor interaction.
