So, you’re ready to start freelancing?  Congratulations!  Here’s a checklist of items and tasks to work on before you start reeling in all the clients..

Legal

  • Set up an LLC, other other legal business structure, with a layer or using an online solution like LegalZoom.
  • Create a contract template for your projects.  Check out Freelancers’ Union for free templates.

Marketing
Identify Your Niche

Create a Marketing Plan

  • Do a SWOT analysis on your offerings and competitors
  • Gather social proof and testimonials to share on your website and marketing materials
  • Commit to a marketing strategy – and outline what you’ll do each week to stick to it

Grow Your List

  • Signup for an email marketing provider, like Mailchimp or AWeber
  • Ensure your online site has a place to capture emails of potential customers

Management

  • Set up project management tools needed for:
    • Client projects
    • Time tracking
  • Create templates for:
    • Proposals
    • Onboarding new clients
    • Project updates
    • Invoices

Branding and Communications

  • Rewrite your bio
  • Write copy for your services/offerings
  • Update your portfolio
  • Update other online platforms for consistent branding and copy
    • LinkedIn
    • Facebook
    • Twitter
    • Quora: Don’t overlook the opportunity to be seen as an expert on Quora

Tech

  • Buy your domain name
  • Ensure you have an email address that reflects your domain name and forwards to your preferred email provider
  • Set-up a website if you don’t already have one.  Anything from a WordPress site to About.me will work
  • Test how quickly your website loads
  • Ensure your website is responsive to multiple devices and screen displays

Finance

  • Research rates of your competitors and industry
  • Price your offerings
  • Open a business bank account
  • Create a system for invoicing and payments.  Freshbooks is recommended by many freelancers.
  • Consult a tax professional so you ensure you’re putting aside enough income for taxes
